For dog, cats, plants, and themselves, the human race has been an agent of change without realizing it. God may not play dice, as Einstein famously said, but nature does. It has only one goal and that is to make more of itself. All life uses the same "cookbook," DNA, but with different recipes for everything from fleas to frogs to humans. The characters in the story look for an alien cookbook to find out what it could make. Meanwhile, a proto-race of very humanistic robots, "bots," are around the corner. and have no need for DNA.
All the biologic terms are up-to-date and explained by analogy or simple English. Artificial intelligence has advanced beyond the present day, and space travel has progressed but stays within known laws..
The story begins in the predawn of human history with the domestication of wolves to dogs, wild cats to house cats, and wild wheat to that which made your cereal this morning. These events had no recordings, but the author thinks that something like them happened. Likewise, a half-century from now, events of the story might unfold.
