Starting Over
Dana Confair
Every family has secrets. I just never thought that the secret that my family was keeping was about me. It all started with an invitation to spend a week in England with my best friend. When my parents couldn't find my birth certificate, I became suspicious. My organized mother never loses things, and mine was the only one missing. A simple blood test in biology lab made me even more concerned that they were lying to me. I accidentally discovered that the man who raised me as his daughter could not be my biological father. Then I found a forged birth certificate on the computer. When I couldn't find any baby pictures of myself, I figured out the truth. I had been adopted. But one day my best friend and I discovered a secret that even my parents didn't know. When the secret came out, my life would never be the same. I had been raised in a military family that moved around a lot. I was used to new schools and new friends, but my family always stayed the same. I suddenly found myself moving in with a family that I didn't know. I had a new family, a new name, a new school, and a new life. Not only did I have to get used to all the changes, but so did my new parents and siblings. They had memories that didn't include me, traditions that I had never been a part of, and family vacations that I had never been on. I wasn't quite sure how I would fit in with them. I had to learn to start over with my new life.
