A Jk Sutherland
When you take the plunge, they say, your whole life flashes before your eyes. The highs, the lows. In the original myth of Icarus, the eponymous hero was warned not to fly too close to the sun, for fear that the wax which attached his wings to him might melt. In AJK Sutherland's tale, it is all the trappings of the 21st century which melt, and our Icarus is left to contemplate his life as a failure, with no hope of redemption. Only a small, scruffy dog might save him... But is it too late, as he balances on the edge of the bridge, looking out on his death. 'Leaper' is the third novelette of the Classic Myths Reinvented series from White House Press. Taking as its inspiration the mythical character of 'Icarus', AJK Sutherland's tragic tale of failed ambition and hubris is "a tear-a-minute writing" (The Book Shelf Reviews) which "soars to the heights of mania, before plunging to the depths of depression... sometimes within the same sentence." (The Bar-Room Literary Critic).
