After the success of her first novel Chip of the Flying U, B. M. Bower wrote several more novels and collections of short stories about the Flying U Ranch, mostly focusing on the supporting characters. A few years after ending the series with 1929's Rodeo, Bower was persuaded to write more Flying U stories supposed to pre-date the events of Chip of the Flying U. Some of her earlier Flying U short stories were also evidently expanded and adapted into full-length books.
