The world did not end in fire. It did not end in ice. It ended for want of an insect. The global famine and societal collapse that followed would render humans an endangered species themselves, hanging onto survival in the most remote places. Over one hundred years later, the Settlement thinks they've solved the problem by enslaving all men and allowing only women to rule. In this community men are viewed as wholly unfit to make decisions of their own, widely blamed for the downfall of the species. Women, by contrast, are painted as inherently honest, wise and natural-born leaders. After handling a series of related murders and picking up a pair of new slaves, Captain of the Guard Willow Pelletier isn't so sure.
