David Barton's vivid memories of his experiences with water are the vehicle he uses in his effort to explain how his unusual life unfolded. Efforts to not be consumed by the 'bullshit' and boredom of making a living lead him to unusual situations. The years up to his early teens were in the Midwest, filled with frequent moves back and forth from city to farms and the water experiences during that time read as if the memories of them put him back in the perspectives of his childhood. During the Air Force years, ages 17 to 20, his fearless rush into the adventures of adulthood, two crossings of the Pacific Ocean and experiencing a foreign culture, give him a new perspective of life. He flounders as a civilian, marries, and for a while his spirit is stifled by the responsibility. After a variety of construction jobs, he goes to work on a commercial fishing boat to escape the 'bullshit'; learns how to fish salmon and that nice guys on the dock can be bastards to live with on a boat. He buys a boat and struggles at trying to make a living fishing salmon off the coast of northern California. After facing death when his boat sinks everything changes and in a few years he is taking tourists sailing along the coast of the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia. Volume 2 is in process.
