A strange mutation has caused almost all of humanity to become cannibals and descend into barbarism. Society has dissolved. The world is in ruins. Matt King is alone. This intense, nail-biting drama follows Matt as he treks through the remains of the country, living the life of a nomad in a world that's been overrun with formerly human monsters who hunt human beings as food. The grim, dark, twisted simplicity clashes with the civilized complexity of the past as Matt goes to any lengths necessary to survive. The harsh environment forces him to grapple with what it means to be human in a world full of savage cannibals that were once living, breathing people (and still may be, though the degree to which that may or may not be true is still in question). How much humanity can one lose and still be considered a person? How much is human life worth when all semblance of human society has been destroyed? And how far can someone go to survive before he or she becomes a monster themselves? By the end of his journey, will Matt be able to find satisfactory answers to these questions - or will he succumb to the monsters both around and within?
