Charlie Doyle is a tender-footed, risk-averse academic whose quiet life in the Seattle suburbs is destroyed by an invasion by an unknown alien enemy. When his neighbors and community flee to the countryside, Charlie stays behind believing help is right around the corner. Each passing day and increasingly dangerous encounters with hostile invaders and desperate survivors, however, confirm to Charlie that hope for rescue is fading. With no savior in sight and the shelter and security of his fortified home in jeopardy, Charlie abandons his reclusive life in search of safety eastward over the mountains, risking everything to embark on a treacherous journey of a thousand miles in search of the one person who could save them all and put an end to the war.
