Upright is a true account of a man and his battle with COVID-19. It is a narrative about the human condition and the capabilities of one person to overcome the virus in midst of the pandemic as it swept across the globe, filling hospitals to beyond capacity, and killing hundreds of thousands of people. As written, "With every nurse that came to my bedside, an attempt would be made to lay me flat. I learned very quickly that lying flat simply hurt more. The pain in my chest would intensify as the angle flattened and I chose to stay upright. Since nurses and medical assistants would come to my side frequently, I had to explain myself. I didn't want to lay down. I wanted to remain upright. As my condition worsened and COVID began to win the battle, communicating my desire to each of them became more and more difficult. Sometimes the communication was reduced to a hand wave and a less than audible grunt, but the message was received. I remained determined. It hurt too much to lay down." Upright is his story.
