When the album Stakes Is High was released in 1996, it marked De La Soul's fourth studio album and their first without producer Prince Paul. The result was a rawer and more minimalist sound, with the young J Dilla leaving a significant mark on the title track. The single became one of the group's most iconic releases, reaching number 53 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart, while the album peaked at number 4 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums.

Today, Stakes Is High stands as one of De La Soul's most important works. With sharp lyrics, confident attitude, and a timeless blend of soulful beats and social commentary, the album delivers a powerful portrayal of the hip-hop scene in the mid-90s.
