Shawn Colvin is one of those rare artists that, through a combination of honest voice and tender music, makes even her most intricate poetry seem effortless. These eleven songs are cutting, emotional, strong, and consistent. The melody on the opening track is perfect; "Polaroids" is a collection of images and stories about life, matched with a flowing melody. Intimate songwriting, perfect production, backed-up by the Subdudes, Bruce Hornsby, and the lovely Valerie Carter, and Colvin's sweet, crystalline voice hit the nadir with "Fat City." Standout songs are "Kill the Messenger," "Climb On", and Colvin's cover of Warren Zevon's "Tenderness On The Block" is fabulous!
